World Famous San Diego Zoo
The world famous San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park just north of Downtown San Diego. The San Diego Zoo is renowned for its volume and diversity of animals; the zoo is home to over 4,000 specimens from more than 800 different species, everything from insects to reptiles to large and small mammals. The zoo is also one of very few American zoos with Giant Pandas; San Diego has one of the most successful Panda breeding programs, with all 5 Panda cubs born surviving to adulthood. In fact, the conservation and research programs at the zoo have helped foster the births of numerous zoo babies from a number of species, everything from wallabies and gorillas to hippos and elephants.
The San Diego Zoo’s sister facility, the Safari Park, is a large space north of El Cajon that is home to a number of endangered species and large mammals from around the world. The arid valley is perfect for recreating a savanna-like environment to closer resemble the natural habitat of many of the park’s residents. Popular Safari Park attractions include the African Tram tour that takes guests through an open plain exhibit and the tethered balloon ride that gives guests a bird’s eye view of the entire park.
Both parks offer regular visiting hours as well as special events and tours available to parties who book reservations in advance.
